Did you know that not all coconut oils are the same? Even if they're both ‘raw, virgin and organic’, there can be a vast difference between two different brands of coconut oil. It’s all down to the quality of the coconuts, the conditions in which they grow and the way the oil is made. All of these factors affect the fragrance, texture, skin-feel and grade of the finished product. Think about the wide variety of olive oils you find in the supermarket. It’s amazing how varied they can be… and the same can be said for coconut oil!

The secret’s in the coconuts

There are many different varieties of coconut and Kokoso Baby uses only the finest certified organic coconuts from some of the oldest coconut trees in Thailand. They grow on our sustainable, family-run farm and are extra special because their variety is unique to this region of Thailand.

Each coconut that makes it into a Kokoso pot is lovingly grown on the tree for around 12 months and then hand-harvested (by people, not monkeys!) before being individually checked and even smelt to identify any impurities. Only the freshest, purest coconut makes it in. The coconuts then go through a very gentle yet state-of-the-art process to make our raw, cold-pressed, virgin, ultra lightweight organic coconut oil.

Cold-pressed and triple-filtered

Kokoso uses a cold-pressed centrifugal process to make our coconut oil for babies, and of course it comes from the first press of the coconuts making it a virgin coconut oil. This means it retains all of its amazing natural nutrients.

Kokoso is also fresh-pressed (sometimes referred to as wet-pressed or wet-milled), which means the coconut fruit isn’t dried out like you’ll find with many other supermarket brands of coconut oil. They often have to use chemicals and heat in the production process, but we don’t use any chemicals or heat to make Kokoso.  

Other brands leave their coconut fruit to dry out in the sunlight or over a fire, causing bacteria to fester which means the dried out coconut fruit (called copra) needs to be washed with chlorine. Because Kokoso's coconuts are always pressed within three hours of being opened, they are only ever cleaned using purified water, never chlorine.

Perhaps the biggest differentiator for Kokoso is a special part of the cutting-edge, protected process used to make our coconut oil. This unique, ultra cold extraction technique was invented by a university professor, and creates a more lightweight oil (or less dense) – which means it absorbs beautifully into baby's skin without leaving them feeling greasy.

The mum behind Kokoso also selected this coconut oil because she’s very picky (and don't we know it)! She rejected countless coconut oils from around the world before choosing Kokoso. Not only did it tick all of the boxes above, but she also fell in love with its fresh and mild scent combined with the amazing silky smooth texture of the oil.

In fact, we believe Kokoso is as close in fragrance to freshly cracked coconut as it comes – and we receive so many compliments on its beautiful natural aroma! Many of the others we tested had an overpowering, sickly-sweet smell like desiccated coconut, and felt greasy or gritty on our baby’s skin. Just not good enough!
