Our Advice

Consistency

Because it’s completely natural, raw virgin coconut oil is different to other skincare products. At room temperature it’s a solid, pure white oil with a waxy texture that melts to a silky smooth liquid oil in the warmth of your hands, ready to apply to your baby’s delicate skin. Because it’s solid you’ll need to use a clean teaspoon, spatula or your fingers to scoop out a small amount of the oil, remembering that a little goes a long way.

Patch testing

All Kokoso Baby® products have been dermatologically tested and certified safe for newborn, sensitive skin and eczema-prone skin, mild for skin and kind to skin. Of course, as with all natural products we recommend carrying out a patch test on a small area of your little one’s skin if it’s your first time using our products. Simply apply a small amount of the product to the inside of the forearm and leave for 24 hours to see if the skin reacts. If redness or irritation occurs, stop using the product.

Melting point

Don’t forget! Coconut oil turns to a liquid at temperatures above 24°C (not often a problem around here) so take care when opening the lid in the summer to avoid spills. Whatever the consistency, and no matter how many times it melts and resets, it still retains all of its magical moisturising properties.

Storage

Store your pot of natural goodness out of direct sunlight and away from hot radiators. In the summer, if you prefer to apply our coconut oil as a solid oil, it’s quite happy being kept in the fridge. (Top tip. Kokoso works wonders as a skin-soothing natural after sun when applied straight from the cold fridge!)

Fragrance Free or Softly Scented?

While all of our products are safe to use from birth, we understand that newborn skin is easily irritated and should be gently nurtured as your little one grows. Our ultra mild Fragrance-Free products are specially formulated to care for newborns and those with particularly sensitive skin. When your little one’s skin has had some time to strengthen and mature, you may wish to start introducing a natural fragrance into their bath and skincare routine. That’s where our super gentle 100% natural allergen-free Coconut and Organic Lavender products come in.

Coconut Allergies

Although coconut allergies are rare we always recommend patch testing our products on first use, in case of a reaction. Coconut is actually classified as a fruit, not as a botanical nut. It’s a very different plant from peanut or tree nuts, and most people who have tree nut allergies can safely eat coconut. The presence of the letters “nut” does not mean that coco-“nut” will trigger an allergic reaction in people allergic to peanut or tree nuts. The relative frequency of allergy to peanut and tree nuts (relatively common) compared to those allergic to coconut (very rare) would suggest that the risk of coconut allergy in an individual known to be allergic to peanut or tree nuts is very low, so much so that allergy testing to coconut is not considered as routine.
